Often, one browses through a magazine or watches a commercial and never realizes the creative force behind the final product. With clients a client list that includes some of the biggest names in entertainment, photography, and fashion, such as Nikon, Disney, and Elle China, there’s a good chance that you have come across the work of Nikon Ambassador, Dixie Dixon.
Hailing from Texas, Dixon is a commercial fashion photographer who, along with her enviable body of work, has shot internationally in places, according to Dixon’s official website, such as Cannes, Toronto, Vancouver, New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Ibiza, and Barcelona recently for various brands, tv shows, commercial campaigns and editorial projects.
Recently, Dixon spoke with Samy’s Camera about finding inspiration, the artistic process in the age of technology, and tips for budding photographers.
On where to draw inspiration:
“Everywhere! There is a ton of amazing work out there. I tend to find a new inspiration every day from new and well-known painters, poets, graphic designers, and photographers; from billboards to blogs and galleries to street art. I love how each of us sees the world differently and how it comes to life through different mediums.”
About the most significant visual moment of Dixon’s professional career:
“I think the most significant visual moment of my professional career is in every next image I have yet to create. For me, the best visual moments happen when all the hard work, planning, dream team, and creative chaos somehow comes together on the day of the shoot and enables us to create something bigger than I could have created by myself.”
Film or Digital?
“Both for sure! I remember spending countless hours in the darkroom in college. I think film was a great teacher in how to craft an image in camera without having to rely on heavy post-production. So ultimately, I think film shaped my style in photography. I love the organic process and still love to create in camera. I work primarily with the Nikon D5. It’s amazing how these high-end digital cameras today have streamlined the whole process of photography and made it so much easier to express our visions. The image quality that we can capture in a frame is insane!”
On technology and its effect on the artistic process:
“Technology has changed the creative landscape exponentially! Things move so quickly now; and, we have so much information available at our disposal. I think the real trick is sorting through the noise to express and find our own unique voice and vision. I think now, more than ever, technology has empowered us all to pursue our own path in photography. There is no set creative path; the opportunities are endless. Because of technology, my artistic process now includes much more collaboration and teamwork than would have been even possible ten years ago. That is what I love most about it: Teamwork makes the dream work!”
The one piece of advice Dixon would give to an aspiring photographer:
“Shoot what you love, work hard, soak up good information like a sponge, learn your craft, get to know yourself, travel as much as possible, collaborate, and explore. This photography thing is full of serendipity and magic. And, sometimes the magic is disguised by a heck of a lot of hard work. But, still see the magic. And when you’re about to give up, keep going, keep shooting, keep facing those fears, and keep dreaming those big dreams.”
